As Malaysians, we certainly have our own unique ways of consuming some food and beverages. For instance, we’ll get Iced Milo in a bowl at the Mamak restaurant, where the “Anneh” will pour our drink into a transparent plastic bag and put it into a bowl before serving the drink to us.
We don’t usually need to explain the term “in a bowl” to the “Anneh” because they know just the way and the portion we want in our drinks. That’s why we love Anneh!
A Malaysian man recently requested for Teh Ais in a bowl, and he got what he wanted, just not in a way he expected. In a viral TikTok video shared by @lioneldem, his friend is seen laughing soon after his drink was served to him. Instead of getting his beverage in a transparent plastic container, his drink was served in a tall glass which is placed in a bowl.
Well, it’s not right but it’s not wrong either. We guess the employee of the restaurant took his order too literally.
Lionel’s friend did not complain about the drink but he accepted his “fate” and enjoyed his drink.
Speaking to WORLD OF BUZZ, Lionel said that unlike what many think, the place was actually NOT a Mamak restaurant.
“It was actually a Malay restaurant in Pasir Mas, Kelantan.”
Lionel also told WORLD OF BUZZ that it was their 1st time visiting the restaurant and they believed the locals there may not be familiar with the term “dalam mangkuk (in a bowl)”.
It’s a Klang Valley thing
The clip went viral on social media and many netizens found it hilarious that the worker took the order too literally. Some of them said that the term “in a bowl” is only applicable within the Klang Valley.
“1 of the reasons why we should be clear when placing our orders. Some places might understand what you want, some places will give you this.”
“I did this in Johor. The worker told me Iced Milo wasn’t available in a bowl but they had a Jumbo size.”
“In a bowl is only applicable at Mamak restaurants, my dear friends.”
“I think no one outside KL understands the term. I used to order Teh Ais in a bowl in Terengganu, he poured my drink into a bowl.”
“This is okay. I wanted Iced Milo in a bowl somewhere in Kelantan, he literally poured my drink into a bowl. Didn’t need a straw, I had to slurp it.”
“Consider yourself lucky that you still got it in a cup.”
“It’s not wrong, but it’s not right either.”
